Responsibilities include :

  • Write scholarly and commercial catalogue entries for various Contemporary Art sale catalogues
  • Conduct extensive research for works consigned to sale, using Sotheby’s library and external resources
  • Research and source comparable images and manage copyright permission
  • Assist the department Cataloguers in all aspects of the cataloguing process
  • Assist other members of the Department in writing and preparing proposals for sale
  • Manage the Library and oversee the regular ordering of books.
  • Assist the department in researching the whereabouts of specific artworks and work alongside Client Developer to research historical sales
  • Assist the department in areas other than research, including catalogue data entry, exhibition set-up, and condition report compilation as directed.
  • Skills / Competencies / Experience

  • Degree Educated or equivalent preferably in Contemporary Art or related field
  • First class writing skills, ability to absorb information quickly and prepare academic and commercial copy to tight deadlines
  • Must be a graduate in Art History with genuine interest in Contemporary Art
  • Thorough research skills - experience in archival research would be an advantage but is not essential
  • Eye for detail and a methodical approach
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Good communication skills, complete fluency in English, Cantonese and Mandarin required (written Chinese essential)
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends during sale and deadline periods
