Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board ( OTPP ) is the administrator of Canada's largest single-profession pension plan, with CAD 241.

6 billion in net assets as of December 31, 2021. We hold a diverse global portfolio of assets, approximately 80% of which is managed in-house.

TVG plans to more than double the size of its portfolio to comprise seven to 10 per cent of OTPP’s net assets over the next five to ten years, up from approximately three per cent today.

The opportunity

Based out of Hong Kong, you will play a meaningful role as an integral part of its dynamic and successful fund investing team.

You will provide coverage of all external manager relationships in Asia Pacific, working closely with the Head of TVG Funds to support the execution of TVG’s Funds strategy and other key strategic initiatives.

This role will involve building strong ties and engagement across TVG’s existing in-region fund partners, helping identify and evaluate prospective relationships, and working to drive direct investment opportunities (co-invest / follow-ons), knowledge sharing and insights for the broader TVG team.

You will be responsible for all aspects of execution of commitments (conducting diligence, preparing investment memorandums & supporting analysis, generating investment recommendations, and reviewing and negotiating legal documentation), and post-investment management.

Who you'll work with

In your new role, you will report to the Head of TVG Funds and via a matrixed reporting, to the Managing Director, TVG Asia who is based in Hong Kong.

You will also work closely with other members of the TVG Funds team globally and collaboratively with TVG’s APAC direct investment team, as well as with other investment teams (Private Capital - Global Funds, Total Fund Management, Strategy & Risk) more broadly, to drive sector and investment stage specialization and regional coordination.

What you'll do

Day-to-day, you will help to lead existing and prospective portfolio activity, including relationship management, deal origination, and post-investment monitoring.

Specific activities in support of generating accretive fund returns and engagement on direct opportunities with our partners will include :

Evaluating new and follow-on fund investment opportunities by leading due diligence on fund managers, including detailed work on team, track record, investment strategy, market opportunity for fund strategy, alignment of interests, and the validation of the overall opportunity fit for TVG

Preparing investment committee materials and supporting analysis, drafting recommendations, leading transaction structuring, reviewing / negotiating legal documentation, and presenting findings to internal committees as required

Building strong relationships with existing and prospective fund partners in the Asia Pacific region and working closely with TVG’s APAC direct investment team to increase opportunities for direct partnership alongside our existing fund relationships

Fostering strong relationships generally for OTPP’s in the region (limited partners, advisors, SWFs, industry associations)

Partnering and communicating with the team across all offices ensuring appropriate parties are kept informed and engaged on transactions or initiatives

Developing and maintaining fund sector coverage maps

Developing and maintaining relationships with VCs, limited partners, and various industry organizations

Serving on Limited Partner Advisory Committees, taking a leadership role, consistent with TVG’s desire to promote strong alignment of interest, transparency, and good governance with its fund partners

Representing TVG at annual meetings and industry conferences

Responsible for all aspects of the valuation process, ongoing monitoring, and administration of fund investments, including analyzing fund holdings for potential investment / co-investment opportunities and key industry trends

Identify potential co-investment opportunities from GP networks and participate opportunistically on supporting execution in partnership with the TVG APAC direct investment team.

Staying abreast of regulatory issues specific to the region

Contributing to other OTPP initiatives defined as critical by senior leaders within TVG including initiatives crafted to share the insights of TVG with the broader Investment organization

What you'll need

At least 5 to 7 years of relevant financial experience from within a similar role (preferably in FoFs, VC / growth equity principal / fund investing or investment banking)

Bachelor’s degree in related field. A graduate degree, MBA, CFO or other is a plus

Strong communication skills with high proficiency in English and Mandarin, both written and oral

Demonstrated experience, relationships, and interest in the region / markets

Keen interest in disruptive / innovative technology trends

A strong teammate and relationship builder, with the ability to negotiate, influence, make recommendations and facilitate decision making processes with senior management

Outstanding interpersonal and presentation skills, with the ability to synthesize sophisticated concepts into plain language tailored to specific audiences

Excellent analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth analysis with a high degree of attention to details

A global mindset-oriented approach to working on opportunities

An ability to balance competing priorities, work independently, handle projects, and thrive in a high-performance team environment

Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint

Significant travel, both regional and sometimes, global, is required
