The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice-President for Administration and Business of the University.

The Role

HKUST is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Vice-President for Administration and Business (VPAB).

Reporting to and working closely with the President, the VPAB is the University’s principal officer providing strategic leadership in the planning, coordination and oversight of the financial and administrative resources of the University, a member of the senior management team, and a part of the senior leadership assisting in the development of the University’s overall strategies, policies and programs.

Major areas of responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Capital project planning, development and facilities management
  • Financial, treasury and procurement strategies, operations and control
  • Human resources
  • IT-enabled administration and management information
  • Health, safety and sustainability
  • In addition, the University is currently embarking on the development of the HKUST (Guangzhou) campus. The unified system between the Clear Water Bay campus and the Guangzhou campus covers functions including IT, finance, budgeting, human resources, campus safety and development etc.

    It is imperative that the VP-AB will be able to work effectively and maintain a partnership with the Government and university leaders in the development and operations of both campuses.

    The Person

    The successful candidate will be a seasoned and forward-looking senior executive with demonstrated leadership qualities, who shares the aspirations of the University and is committed to making an impact through building and sustaining for the University a vibrant physical, fiscal and administrative infrastructure to help support its high goals.

    Desired attributes include :

  • Substantial management experience, preferably in a higher education setting or from organizations with comparable complexities
  • Appreciation of the dynamics and challenges of the Hong Kong and PR China systems
  • Strong business acumen, with leadership and commitment to design and implement the best practices and to provide outstanding financial and administrative services, budgetary including capital expenditure planning and control in support of the advancement of the University’s vision and mission
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with other leaders and in partnership with the Council, Schools, Departments and other parts of the University community
  • Understanding of different perspectives of stakeholders in relation to different issues
  • Broad and strategic outlook with both an international and local perspective
  • Progressive in vision and implementation
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and command of written and spoken English
  • The post is a full-time appointment, normally for an initial term of 5 years, and renewable subject to mutual agreement.
