Managing Director, Greater China Legal

About this role

The Head of Legal role for Greater China is to be based in Hong Kong and you will be employed by BlackRock Asset Management North Asia Limited.

It will be responsible for leading and managing legal issues for our business in this region (Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan), and will involve leading a dynamic team of lawyers.

You will report to the General Counsel for Asia Pacific and interact regularly with the global legal and compliance teams

The position will encompass the following key responsibilities :

  • As a Senior Counsel, you will provide advice to senior partners on, and supervise lawyers working on, the legal and regulatory aspects of the different parts of BLK’s business in Greater China, including product fund launches, exchange traded funds, marketing advice, and other regulatory advice
  • Provide supervision on the drafting of legal documentation and handle regulatory processes for fund creation / amendment
  • Liaise with regulators, stock exchanges and industry groups to lobby for BLK’s initiatives and respond to consultation papers
  • Run and lead the legal and regulatory issues associated with BLK’s expansion into new markets, particularly China
  • Lead the review, drafting and negotiation of agreements in support of BLK’s business operations (e.g. constitutive fund documentation, investment management agreements, derivative documentation, distribution agreements, trademark and other intellectual property licenses and brokerage service agreements, amalgamation / M&A documents etc.)
  • As an experienced Legal Counsel, advice and support other control functions, including Compliance and Internal Audit
  • Provide senior level legal advice and support with respect to the governance and control framework to ensure compliance with all regulatory and statutory obligations
  • Support and advise the Boards and Directors of the BLK investment management companies as appropriate.
  • Partner with senior compliance staff to ensure that the business understands and acts in accordance with standard methodologies for compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Work closely with senior offshore Legal & Compliance colleagues to ensure consistency of advice and practices
  • Effective engagement and management of external counsel, including cost management.
  • Skills and Experience Desired

  • 15-20 years’ post qualification legal experience, particularly, in-house experience, with a focus on asset management
  • Self-starter with ability to manage a team of lawyers
  • Written and spoken Chinese (particularly Mandarin)
  • Strong research, analytical and project management skills with the ability to identify issues and to articulate appropriate solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively influence and persuade
  • An ability to operate effectively and constructively in a demanding and fluid working environment handling multiple tasks
