The Chief Actuary, Asia is regionally accountable for provision of governance and strategic services in respect of actuarial matters, regional oversight of actuarial practices within Asia, ensuring the integrity and quality of the region’s actuarial controls, processes, systems, data and documentation, internal value added services and providing expertise on actuarial matters.

Relevant actuarial practice areas include valuation and financial reporting, product development and pricing, reinsurance, capital and participating and adjustable policy management.

It communicates and executes a strategy consistent with the enterprise-wide strategy to ensure sustainable shareholder value and perpetuates a high performance and stakeholder-focused environment.

The Chief Actuary, Asia will report directly to the SVP, Chief Actuary and matrix reporting to Chief Financial Officer, Asia.

Responsibilities :

Leadership and Vision

Leads the Regional Office Actuarial Teams (Financial Actuarial, Actuarial Peer Review Asia and Actuarial Service Centre Asia) and the In-Country Chief Actuaries in developing and executing region wide strategies to optimize shareholder and policyholder value by :

Providing strong, capable and innovative leadership and vision in respect of actuarial functions within the region aligned with both the corporate vision worldwide and the regional business goals.

Guiding the Practice Leaders to drive the improvement in quality of actuarial work towards worldwide standards of best practice, the consistency of practices throughout the region, and the development of high-quality training frameworks.

Guiding the In-Country Chief Actuaries in developing a vision for efficient actuarial processes and frameworks that meet both actuarial and business objectives on accurate, timely, and valuable deliverables.

Creating an atmosphere that fosters high ethical standards and the upholding of the governing principles of Sun Life Financial Code of Conduct.

Governance, Compliance and Risk Management

Ensures that the governance and controls in place around each practice area meet, where applicable, Sun Life policies, standards, and guidelines, as well as protecting the integrity of the results, the analysis, or the assessments by :

Guiding the Practice Leaders to put in place any corporate or regionally initiated guidelines or frameworks, plus ensure adherence to all policies and guidelines, as applicable.

Overseeing internal and external peer review of processes to meet internal and professional and OSFI requirements; and

Ensuring that key controls exist throughout the valuation and other actuarial calculation engines and processes.

Resource Management

Oversees the management of all operational, financial, and human resources for area of accountability to ensure the effective and efficient allocation of resources by :

Ensuring that key actuarial leaders (practice leaders and chief actuaries) are well suited to their roles, adequately trained, motivated, and providing leadership for the actuarial work in their country or practice area.

Directing and approving annual work plans, including specific objectives for direct reports.

Creating an open environment in which to work, providing the right tools and the leadership to encourage collaboration and innovation.

Ensuring regional office actuarial functions continue to be a source of actuarial expertise and guidance in practice areas by a balance of maintaining personal knowledge and expertise and retaining practice leaders, experts in their practice area.

Monitoring HR policies, establishing a work environment characterized by high levels of employee engagement, developing a strong succession pool of candidates for key roles, maintaining an appropriate pay for performance alignment between compensation and business results, encouraging participation in professional and industry associations and identifying and developing actuarial talent throughout the region.

Leveraging the expertise and knowledge of SLF worldwide by drawing on the expertise and guidance of the Corporate Office (or other areas of SLF), recruiting on a permanent or temporary bases, other SLF resources (could be part of an International Rotation), or with learning experience for regionally based top talent.

Model leadership and OneSunLife values to the 200-strong actuarial community within Sun Life Asia.

Actuarial Services

Leverage the expertise of the regional actuarial function to enhance the business operations in the region by :

Working with the CRO, CFO and Finance team members, providing an understanding of the implications of the actuarial work, helping develop regional or country specific financial and capital strategies.

Working with the other regional executives, providing strategic input to country specific direction, in establishing overall broad-based regional direction, or in assessing specific opportunities or business cases for acquisitions, expanded distribution arrangements or other business opportunities.

As a member of the Financial Management Working Group, providing actuarial expertise and leadership on initiatives to improve business results.

Qualifications :

Ability to operate in an agile environment supporting a business transformation, and in a matrixed structure within a global business

Deep insurance and financial expertise and experience working across different cultures

Broad Finance Actuarial experience in a global, large, complex organization
