CPP Investments has an opening for a Director, Legal. Reporting to the Managing Director, Legal (located in our Hong Kong office), the successful and exceptional candidate will join our top calibre Legal Department and a dynamic team of legal and compliance professionals who engage directly with senior leadership and business units in providing legal and compliance advice and support for CPP Investments’ fast-growing activities in the region.
This role provides an excellent opportunity to work on a variety of complex, leading edge, and high-profile transactions across CPP Investments’ investment groups across APAC (ex-India), and to support our continued enterprise growth in the region.
Specifically, this role is responsible for :
Providing transaction support, within the scope of CPP Investments’ legal services model, on a broad range of sophisticated and innovative investments in APAC (ex-India) and on international transactions with a significant nexus to APAC (ex-India), working closely with investment teams in the region
Providing legal advice to CPP Investments’ investment departments and core services departments in connection with the day-to-day activities of CPP Investments in APAC (ex-India), including maintenance and governance of CPP Investments’ investment and operational entities in the region
Monitoring and advising on new developments in local laws or regulations applicable to CPP Investments’ investments and operations in APAC (ex-India)
This position will be based in Hong Kong and may involve travel within the region.
Responsibilities
Provide creative and thoughtful transaction support at an enterprise level and specific to investment teams, including structuring advice, review of investment recommendations, and material transaction documents, within the scope of CPP Investments’ legal services model
Provide day-to-day legal advice and support to CPP Investments’ growing investment advisory and operational services teams in Hong Kong, Sydney and global core services teams relating to APAC (ex-India)
Provide legal support in connection with the operation and maintenance of international offices within the region (ex-India)
Provide and support training of local CPP Investments staff and law firms on institutional-level and deal-specific transactional considerations
Assist in developing and maintaining relationships with law firms within APAC (ex-India)
Assist in tracking, analyzing, and informing the organization regarding new or changed laws or regulations that could impact CPP Investments’ activities in APAC (ex-India)
Anticipate, identify, and assist in managing legal risks relating to new investment strategies and activities, and to departmental strategies
Assist in managing and overseeing handling of litigation and disputes in APAC (ex-India)
Collaborate with CPP Investments’ public affairs and compliance team in APAC in analysing, strategizing and drafting submissions on legislative and regulatory matters
Be a key contributor to the Legal Department and CPP Investments-wide initiatives and projects
Generally, assist on other legal matters as they arise
Qualifications
LL.B. / LL.M / JD or equivalent required
Minimum of 7 years of legal experience gained at a top-tier in-house financial institution legal department and / or major law firm, including meaningful experience in the region
Experience in financial services, capital markets and / or a transactional background is required
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders and ability to manage outside counsel
Proficiency in Mandarin is an asset
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities, with exceptional attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
Motivated team player and self-starter with the ability to work independently with moderate to minimal supervision
Flexibility and adaptability, including occasional travel and off-hours support relating to transactions, international offices, and projects
