The Junior Programme aims to contribute to the development of a new generation of young people who, following their Junior Expert experience, will commit to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

During their field experience, the focus is on developing competences, innovation, contact with the local reality and networking.

This way, our Junior Experts can professionally contribute to the project / programme to which they are assigned; and at the same time, they acquire the necessary competences and expertise to actively contribute to the SDGs.

The Junior Experts work at least 1 and at most 2 years in a project of Enabel or of one of the Non-governmental Actors (NGA) that are affiliated with the Junior Programme.

The Programme Junior only accepts young people aged 30 at most, who are European nationals, who have a master’s or professional bachelor’s degree and who master French or Dutch (the selection takes place in French or Dutch).

Rikolto is executing a 4-year program (2020-2024) for the European Union aimed at increasing the competitiveness and profitability of the horticulture sector in Southern-Tanzania.

The objective of the project is to contribute to inclusive growth, promote private sector development and job creation in the agricultural sector, and to increase food and nutrition security in Tanzania.

The project will aim at strengthening sector governance through platforms and will start by piloting a regionally-oriented platform focusing on the food smarty city cluster around Mbeya.

The Food Smart City platform Mbeya is focusing on domestic markets of safe and sustainable horticulture products for the + / - 1 million urban citizens around Mbeya.

This platform will build on Rikolto’s experience in building food smart city platforms in 8 cities in the world, amongst others in Arusha.


This person will support the Mbeya chamber of commerce in setting-up a structural multi-stakeholder platform that reunites all actors (government, companies, NGO and academic partners) to develop a local food strategy.

This will increase food safety in fruits and vegetables, leading to better market opportunities for the farmers and healthier and high-nutritious diets for the people in and around Mbeya.

In the second year of the action, the FSC advisor will support actors in other cities in Southern Tanzania to scale up and establish a similar platform.

The advisor will also support Rikolto’s staff in the execution of market actions that aim to increase the consumption of highly-nutritious food by strengthening women and youth’s participation in sustainable nutritional sensitive horticulture value chains in the region.

  • Able to work creatively in low resource / skill environments
  • Be able to translate jargon programme information into an accessible format (language, visuals, etc.)
  • Explorative mindset; willing to try out new things, without a fixed framework or example.
  • Capacity to facilitate and manage group discussions, particularly in a multi-stakeholder context
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to network
  • Previous experience in the field of sustainable food, agriculture, or agribusiness, preferably in the Global South, is an added value.
  • Keen interest for knowledge management and Evidence for Impact
  • Language skills

    English : very fluent, oral and written

    Admission criteria

    Only candidates who meet the following prerequisite admission criteria on 22nd September 2020 can apply :

  • At least hold a professional bachelor's degree or an academic masters, either issued in Belgium or recognized as having equivalent status by competent Belgian authorities (a professional bachelor degree gives direct access to a profession, unlike academic bachelor degree who only gives access to enrolment in an academic Master’s program).
  • Hold Belgian nationality or be a citizen of a member state of the European Economic Union or the Swiss Confederation.
  • Born after 22nd September 1989.
  • Able to deliver an extract from their criminal record to prove their behaviour in accordance with the requirements of the job and enjoying full civil and political rights.
  • Specific criteria (see job profile).
