Working with product development teams across the region to provide technical medical advice and input into product development opportunities as they arise.

Maintains expert general knowledge of medicine, current developments and research for new product and strategic business initiatives.

Undertakes research and development projects to assist regional pricing teams or underwriting guideline and manual development, as required.

Serves as a medical consultant to the Asian markets for traditional and HNW life underwriting, living benefits and claims.

Evaluates medical tests / information, assesses risks, and researches medical procedures and information. Provides ongoing education and training for underwriters and claims examiners or at regional industry seminars, as required.

    Business Development / Strategic

  • Provide technical medical advice and comment to business development and marketing teams on relevant aspects of product development.
  • Support any new regional strategic or business development activities as required.
  • Maintain general knowledge of medical advances and enable application into insurance product development.
  • Continually survey new market and medical trends, changes of regulation and other factors that could influence strategic initiatives or product development.
  • Ensure a high-level communication and cooperation between claims, underwriting, actuaries, business development and all other departments as required.
  • Research and Development

  • Provide advice, medical literature review and research, and relevant statistics on setting assumptions for product pricing or pricing basis / matrix reviews.
  • Provide advice, medical literature review and research, and relevant statistics to aid medical risk selection or set underwriting standards.
  • Assist in developing and integrating medical advances or medical practice policies into underwriting guidelines and manuals.
  • Cooperate and support RGA medical team with opinion or research or peer review, as required.
  • Operational Support

  • Serves as medical consultant for underwriting of traditional and HNW cases from regional RGA offices. Products underwritten will include life and living benefits including critical illness, disability, hospitalization, and medical reimbursement.
  • Read ECGs and stress test and evaluates medical tests / information.
  • Performs mortality and morbidity assessment.
  • Performs medical literature research to evaluate cases as needed.
  • Provides medical opinion to the claims team to assist in the adjudication of life and living benefit claims including critical illness, terminal illness benefit, and disability.
  • Meets deadlines and on own initiative submits decisions to the required controls.
  • Actively participates in improving operational efficiencies and building RGA risk assessment philosophy.
  • Public Relations / Marketing / Education and Training

  • Provides ongoing education and training for RGA regional underwriters and claims examiners through formal presentations, GULF training, or on an ad hoc basis.
  • Meets with RGA regional clients and presents on medical topics at industry or international meetings and seminars.
  • Writes articles for medical director’s newsletter or other relevant marketing material.
  • Contributes information for company medical publication(s) when required.
  • Serves as a liaison with the medical community and other insurance professionals.
  • Requirements

    Education and Experience

    Required :

  • Medical Doctorate with a degree from an accredited medical school
  • 7+ years insurance medicine experience underwriting cases, preferably in a Medical Director role
  • Preferred :

  • Licensed to practice medicine in applicable location
  • Subspecialty training (i.e. insurance medicine board certification, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, family practices, etc.)
  • 5+ years clinical experience
  • Experience in Insurance / Reinsurance underwriting
  • Experience in the review of life and living benefits claims.
  • Experience in setting underwriting standards, evaluating new procedures and new research developments
  • Skills and Abilities :

    Required :

  • Intermediate Word and Excel skills
  • Highly advanced clinical skills
  • Highly advanced knowledge of EKG’s and other tests associated with the underwriting process
  • Highly advanced knowledge of insurance medical practices, trends and research and the ability to apply this knowledge to job and communicate this knowledge to underwriters and management
  • Highly advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Exceptional ability to communicate across various levels and regions of an organization
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to build professional relationships with various departments / stakeholders
  • Advanced knowledge of broad business practices
  • Highly advanced investigative, analytical and problem-solving skills utilizing experience, research, guidelines and internal resources
  • Exceptional skills in managing multiple tasks, projects simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities
  • Exceptional ability to work well within team
