Job Purpose / Background :

The role will involve the provision of legal support in the Asia Pacific region on the full range of employment law issues which impact on our business in APAC.

There are approximately 3,400 employees in this region. There are staff across 8 different employment jurisdictions including Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Australia.

The Employment Lawyer role involves working closely with Human Resources across a wide range of contentious and non-contentious work including employee relations items (grievances, under-performance management, investigations, disciplinaries, flexible working applications, redundancies, mutual separation agreements) and advice to the Recruitment, Mobility, Reward and HR Operations teams.

The individual is expected to be autonomous and, once familiar with the BlackRock structure and operating model, to work with minimum levels of supervision / review of work produced.

Whilst the learning curve will be steep, the candidate will be encouraged to take on a complete workload promptly after joining and partner with our HR team and the other lawyers in the team.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Give legal support to the HR team in the region.
  • Coverage of all aspects of contentious and non-contentious employment law work.
  • Partner with Employee Relations team to provide legal support and advice on employee relations matters including grievances, performance management matters, disciplinaries, flexible working applications, redundancies, mutual separation agreements etc.
  • Working with the HR team and business leaders on key business or regulatory projects previous examples include analysis of Flexible Time Off and Employee Policies and Procedures for our Fund Management Company in China.
  • Collaborate with business and HR on transfers of staff and on the impact on staff of outsourcing, insourcing, new office openings and acquisition activities.
  • Provide solutions alongside with the Rewards team in respect of any legal input required on compensation and benefits matters including remuneration regulations.
  • Advise and support our Recruitment Team on employment contracts and review of restrictive covenants for new hire candidates.
  • Working with colleagues in the US on stock award agreements and matters with a global remit such as diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Represent APAC perspectives within the global employment legal network, advising on and achieving pragmatic balance of global versus local practices and solutions
  • Co-ordinate legal perspectives across the regional network of in-country general counsel, and actively influence and partner in the execution of related HR initiatives
  • Partner with Core Compliance team on staff related regulatory matters such as personal trading, gifts and entertainment and approved / certified person regime.
  • Proactively identify, address, and lead legal risk issues arising with employment law matters within the APAC region.
  • Primary liaison with external counsel for employment related matters
  • Other Responsibilities :

  • Develop and actively be a great partner with key internal stakeholders and external advisers.
  • Conduct training and education sessions where relevant for legal and non-legal members of BlackRock.
  • Knowledge / Experience :

  • Qualified solicitor with 8 10 years’ experience in employment related law & regulation.
  • Solid understanding and application of employment law in key APAC jurisdictions
  • Strong academic record.
  • Comprehensive relevant employment law experience (gained either in private practice or the in-house legal team of a financial services organization).

  • The ability to identify legal risk (even if little prior experience in the relevant area).
  • Strong attention to detail and have the ability to gather information and analyze data.
  • Clarifies tasks and requirements, organizes time and handles workload to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Communicates effectively at all levels of the firm in verbal and written form.
  • Seeks to understand BlackRock’s business, industry, products, and processes.
  • Takes ownership of problems and requirements and ensures they are resolved to meet objectives
