Job Description

General Accountability :

This position assumes Asia leadership role in driving the roll out of Valuation Share Service Centre, which centralizes the liability modeling services and analytics.

Services provided to all BUs (in accordance with the VSSC Service Level Agreement) include the execution, assembly, and initial analysis of all IFRS and local reserves, sensitivities, and capital calculations, as well as the maintenance of associated valuation models and procedures.

All the liability modelling works including assumption changes and all new product launches will be moved from BUs to the SSC.

The SSC will also perform the month end and quarter end production to make sure the models produce results on time and perform the analyses needed for the business units.

The production will include all reporting bases including reporting of Canadian IFRS, local IFRS, local solvency, Canadian capital, NBV and EV.

The incumbent will

  • take a leadership role in the roll out of Valuation Share Service Centre
  • drive the efficiency of the valuation process through standardization and cutting low value work
  • drive a strong partnership with the business unit to help business unit focusing at value added insight to the business.
  • Get the team ready for IFRS17 integration and post go-live support
  • The position provides the challenging opportunity for leading an initiative with many stakeholders including Asia Chief Actuary, MBPS, BU's actuarial function (including CFO, Chief Actuary and Pricing Officer) and Group IT and Finance.

    Responsibilities :

  • Lead the team to work collaboratively with the BU to perform the valuation process.
  • Build the training program to help the team developing their skills set so that over time the team can perform more and more complex type of work.
  • Drive continuous improvement in efficiency
  • Represent Asia on Global Model Council
  • Knowledge / Skills / Competencies / Education :

  • Actuarial designation (FSA / FCIA), combined with experience in the life insurance industry
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Strong project management skill
  • Strong influencing skill
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of Canadian reserving, accounting and capital bases
  • Ability to successfully manage complex projects and deliver timely results
  • Strong professional judgment, ability to assess risks, as well as to effectively identify opportunities for improved efficiency
  • Problems / Challenges :

  • Understand the landscape in Asia and work with business unit with different cultures.
  • Strong influencing and communication skill to manage the variety of stakeholders such as all Asia business unit, accounting and IT function
  • Work under high time pressure especially during the quarter end process
  • Leading multiple location team efficiently
  • Position Dimensions (Organizational Impact) :

  • Direct team size of approximately 40 staff
  • Strong influencing and communication skill to manage the variety of stakeholders such as Asia and all business unit CFO, Chief Actuary and Pricing Officer, Group Finance senior executive, Head of MBPS actuarial.
  • This is one of the key strategic initiatives to drive the expense efficiency for Asia actuarial function. The services center will create a standardized and streamline process to ensure an efficient actuarial operation in light of the new complex IFRS17 accounting process.
