Accountability Statement :

Reporting to the Managing Director, Portfolio Management, Asia ALDA, this role is a member of the Asia General Account Portfolio Management team, responsible for the management and oversight of US$56 billion in AUM, covering a broad range of asset classes including public and private debt, public and private equities, as well as other alternative investments.

The alternative long duration asset (ALDA) portfolios held by Manulife Asia general accounts have over US$5 billion in committed capital and are forecast to grow $1 to 2 billion per annum over the next five years.

The Assistant Portfolio Manager - ALDA will play a critical role in managing and administering the continued growth of alternative assets within the regional balance sheets while participating in deal processes associated with high-

profile investments. This role collaborates with various asset origination desks and functional areas such as Tax, Legal, Accounting, Operations and Capital.

The incumbent leverages strong organizational skills to ensure processes are followed and is proactive in seeking opportunities to drive process improvements.

The successful candidate will rely on logic and parallel thinking to apply past experiences to address new challenges. This position will evolve to participate in the investment review process for fund commitments, eventually supporting and becoming more directly involved with, under the guidance of the Managing Director, highly complex investment processes associated with large investment deals (US$200 mm and above) that are placed in multiple Manulife entities.

The incumbent must be able to work under pressure to tight deadlines, think creatively and flexibly and be detail-oriented.

Responsibilities :

  • Assist with due diligence on ALDA investment opportunities, tracking key items and progress to support and contribute to tailor-
  • made investment recommendations to Manulife’s Asian business units.

  • Conduct research to produce client reporting and to inform investment decisions and portfolio assessments.
  • Coordinate with other portfolio managers and operations on the funding and receipt of capital related to investments.
  • Prepare ALDA investment positions, performance and activity reporting for senior executives and other key stakeholders.
  • Drive the deal allocation process, tracking clients’ investment demand and recent commitments to propose, with the assistance of the Managing Director and Asset Liability Management, allocations of new opportunities.
  • Monitor foreign exchange risks arising from global ALDA investments.
  • Support ad-hoc projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Knowledge / Skills / Competencies / Education :

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, business studies, actuarial science or engineering required; MBA, CFA designation preferred.
  • 5+ years progressive experience in investment management and advisory.
  • Strong analytical and project management skills
  • Excellent PC skills; especially with Microsoft Excel (knowledge of advanced formulas, pivots, macro / VBA knowledge is a plus), Power Point and Word.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work productively with multiple parties at varying levels in the global organization.
  • As such, English language abilities are important in this role.
