What part will you play?

The Security Director in Asia Pacific will play a key role in setting the strategic direction of how CNN protects and supports its workforce across the region and around the world.

You will advise the CNN International Leadership team on all matters relating to safeguarding our security in the field including risk assessments, identifying potential threat levels and providing external intelligence.

Working in partnership with newsgathering and other departments, you will be responsible from a safety and security perspective for planning and coordinating our newsgathering and production efforts.

You will also work with security colleagues in ensuring a safe working environment for our staff in bureaus around the region.

You will be heavily involved in the development of stories which involve trips to hostile environments and will frequently accompany teams into the field to provide guidance and protection.

In addition to personnel, you will also help in the safe deployment of equipment. Much of what you do will be responding to breaking news where the ability to act with speed is essential.

Following deployments, managers will expect a full debrief from you from a safety perspective. Your duties will involve being responsible for establishing a network of SRS specialists in key counties in the APAC region.

These are people whom we can call upon in a freelance capacity to provide extra cover should that be required.

Your role will ensure that staff in APAC are properly trained for operating in hostile environments. You will also ensure that our safety equipment is managed to a high standard at the APAC HQ in Hong Kong and in regional bureaus.

Whilst reporting to the VP, Business Operations & Administration based in Atlanta, this role will report indirectly to the VP and Hong Kong Bureau Chief .

In addition, whilst Hong Kong is the base for this role, you could be asked to travel anywhere in the world at short notice.

You will also be required to oversee / track the movement of colleagues outside of APAC as part of 24 hour safety and security coverage.

What will you be doing?

  • Oversee and direct safety and security for all CNN platforms and departments as required. This work must be aligned with CNN safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with the regional newsgathering staff and the APAC executive team in planning and executing stories. Risk assessments should be made when required.
  • Oversight of movements while teams are deployed, ensuring the execution of the plan or making adjustments as necessary in real-

    time, with consideration of editorial needs as well as conditions on the ground

  • Reviews ours processes and procedures and advises on all elements of travel for CNN and, when necessary, the larger Turner family working in Asia.
  • Negotiate the best value to CNN for services supplied by 3rd party security contractors
  • Ensure non-technical equipment (including kit, "go-bags," PPE, safety gear, troops supplies, etc.) are up to date, well stocked and effective.
  • Ensure our teams are trained appropriately and can utilize field tracking and other safety technology effectively.
  • Be part of the "follow the sun" approach between our CNN International Bureaus. This will include being the point of contact in an emergency for any incident globally if such an incident occurs during a specific period.
  • Identify, evaluate and liaise with appropriate third-party vendors to provide security to teams in the field and / or safety training and equipment.
  • Negotiate the best value to CNN on training and equipment.

  • Ensure all relevant staff and contractors attend HEFAT training and remain current in required training / certification.
  • Periodically review physical safety & security of news bureaus - Respond to and advise with respect to emergencies including but not limited to med-
  • evac, terror attack, war zone incidents, kidnap, ransom, etc.

  • Develop relevant safety policies and procedures.

  • Proven experience working with editorial teams planning field assignments
  • Expertise in the regions in which teams might be deployed
  • Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills
  • Technically savvy
  • Proven management skills with strong ability to influence across a matrix organisation
  • Positioned within the security industry as a figure with proven experience in high risk security situations
  • Ability to maintain sound judgment while working to a deadline, pro-active, able to think broadly and deliver results
  • Superb integrity and professionalism.
  • Must be able to work long hours under a deadline, work well under pressure and in a demanding, fast paced environment
  • Must have strong leadership skills and work well with both production crews and talent.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills in English or other Asian Languages
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Detail oriented, strong organizational skills & ability to meet deadlines
